An Open Letter to Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd

An Open Letter to Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd

Dear Hon
Kevin Rudd
Prime Minster of Australia
Parliament House
Canberra

Yes, we have noticed that the election is approaching fast. And we have noticed that you have panicked and so resorted to the easiest way to stick to power: play on fear from unknown “terrorism”.

You have not provided us with any shred of evidence that a terrorist attack is imminent. All what you have told us is that there were many Muslims who were convicted of “terrorism-related” crimes. Many credible human rights watchdogs have deep concerns about the transparency and fairness of these trials and believe that the convictions were due to the media circus and public frenzy your government and previous government have produced.

Mr Rudd
We are very ashamed of you, your attorney general and
minster for foreign affairs. You have put your interests to win election ahead of Australia’s interests to enjoy good relationships with 10 countries around the world. And we did not recover yet from the shameful wide coverage worldwide about Australian racist attacks on Indian students.

Mr Rudd
You have quoted anonymous security agencies to spread fear and frenzy in the society. The same happened under your predecessor, when he quoted the same agencies to spread lies about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction. Then we have learnt that these reports and information were manufactured to give your government good excuses to invade sovereign nation and destroy it totally.

That was not the only time the security agencies, especially ASIO and Federal Police, had made such wrong moves to serve incumbent government. They did it in the case of Dr Mohamed Haneef.

After that, how can we trust you or your security agencies, who only depend on secret reports and investigations that not available to public?

What has made our trust very weak in you and your security agencies is the hypocrisy in dealing with similar matters in different ways. We assumed that the security agencies are on high alert since 11 September 2001. This has resulted in discovering “terrorist” thoughts and dreams communicated between angry persons of policy of aggression conducted by your predecessor against all Muslim nations. But at the same time, these agencies are standing impotent to finalise security checks of refugees or new migrants. Otherwise, how on earth it took the security agencies more than 4 years to reach conclusion that Mrs Lina Hamdan is not a terrorist and does not having terrorist thoughts and dreams? I can give you hundreds (if not thousands) of similar cases where your security agencies had failed to finalise Form 80 (security check on terrorism-related issues) in less than 2 years.

Mr Rudd
You have failed us. You have failed multiculturalism. You have failed Muslim communities. You have betrayed your voters who voted for your government seeking change. The only change you have introduced is that you can change your colour more easily than your predecessor.

What makes things worse is that you have failed the same communities that have trusted you and voted for your party, historically. We can understand that John Howard did not care about the feelings and interests of new migrants or Muslims, as they are not traditional voters of the Liberals. But for you to play race and Islamophobia cards, it is deeply offensive and disappointing.

We have been betrayed also by the other party who usually gets a lot of our votes. We are watching with deep concern and disappointment the complete silence of the Greens on this particular issue. The Greens also had got a lot of Muslim and pro-multicultural votes.

We could not believe that the regressive racist Liberal party politicians will stand up to expose these lies and deceptive claims. We thought that the ones who claim to be progressive should have stood up and questioned your motives in launching these lies.

Mr Rudd
Your move today has spread fear, uncertainty and social division. Instead of working to breakdown the many barriers and obstacles built during your predecessor, you have built some more.

Mr Rudd
We cannot believe that for you to cover up some of your bungles during wasting our common wealth, you chose to make more destructive moves. It was enough that you have wasted around $2 billions in dodgy insulation program. You should not have created more division and fear that will need another couple of billions of dollars to face its impact.

Mr Rudd
May I also ask you
Who Is a Semite?, Do You Know Who Is a True Jew? and What is a Judeo-Christian culture?. I ask you this question to expose your illogical and irrational pro-Israeli stand as well as deliberate prejudice and bigotry against Muslims and Arabs in general.

Mr Rudd
We are ashamed of you, your government and your Labor party. And we are waiting for the election to let you know about our feelings.

6 June 1997
Matter No: IRC 2383/95

On the 24 April 1996, the Transport Workers Union by agreeing to higher pay-ins (rental charge to bailees), without consulting it's own membership, compromised bailee taxi drivers interests before your Industrial Commission. In reality, the overwhelming majority of the TWU taxi driver members, as well as non-member taxi drivers, were opposed to the TWU’s unacceptable a priori "arrangement" with the taxi owners (Taxi Industry Association). It should also be pointed out that this was in contravention of s275 of the Industrial Relation Act I991 (s105 under the new legislation).

Further, this TWU,/TIA "arrangement" on 24 April 1996 attempted to backdate and legitimate a seven (7) year continuum (1990-96) of illegal overcharging of bailee drivers by taxi owners !In entering into this April 96 "arrangement" there is no evidence that the TWU even considered its detrimental impact on either the income levels or the working conditions of bailee drivers prior to reaching consensus with the TIA in front of the commission on this date.

On a separate issue, on the 6 September 1996, the TWU again compromised bailee taxi drivers interests by agreeing before you to allow the TIA to increase flagfalls by $1.O0 (from $2 to $3). Concomitantly, bailee pay-ins were increased by $40.00 a day over day/night shifts to the detriment of the bailee drivers and the general public (as shown by the consumer resistance to the fare hike). It should have been imperative for the TWU in this instance to take cognizance of the executive summary of the Keatsdale Report (page viii) in regard to the financing of driver safety which stated, "safety measures were unlikely to increase the flagfall by more than one cent".

Given the wide discrepancy between the Keatsdale recommendation{$0.01 ) and the DoT accepted formula ($1.00), as a minimum, the TWU should have insisted on a full cost-benefit analysis from the TIA. Many people believe the $1.00 flagfall has resulted in a net windfall to taxi owners amounting to tens of millions dollars as indicated by the rapid increase of already over-inflated plate values totally divorced from any "market forces", The delays in implementing the safety reforms to the industry have compounded both the driver and general public disquiet over this TWU/TIA arrangement regarding the new flagfall.

As a result of general rumblings in the industry, a properly constituted meeting of the TWU Taxi Drivers' Section was held in Quinn House, Parramatta on 27 November 1996. The central issue under discussion was the proposed TWU submission for a new Determination in 1997. The meeting decided unanimously that "all membership and delegates agree (that) no fixed pay-ins to be included in the next Contract Determination, only percentile of the chargeable fare {are) to be allowed".

At subsequent TWU,/TDS meetings held in the first half of 1997, this policy concerning bailee/bailor payments was re-endorsed without any opposition from the full time union officials. But, in total contradiction of this democratically reached decision, it now appears a TWU Organiser has,/is intending to submit an Interim variation of the Determination before the IRC which is contrary to the members' wishes. In it's current form the draft TWU contract Determination maintains the existing inadequacies in the bailee/bailor relationship, and, if adopted, will further remove the rights of bailees to negotiate with bailors on an equal footing.

In conclusion, I have to read out this statement to you Commissioner, because our next stop will be a Royal Commission into the taxi industry. we will be endeavoring to find out why:

1. The TWU leadership is so eager to compromise it's own members' interests by entering agreements with the TIA without consulting the rank and file ?

2. The TWU leadership refuses to take any effective action to protect it's taxi driver members' interest in regards to safety and remuneration?

3. Today (6.6.97), the TWU are further compromising their members' welfare despite their memberships' total opposition to the proposed Interim Determination - one which reinforces the unjust pay-in methods?

Concerning the broader issues, we ask:

4. Who formulates the TWU policy on the Taxi Industry? Is it it's membership or is it some unknown choreographers?

5. Why the Commission to date has failed to understand the disparity between the TWU leadership and it's membership?

Faruque Ahmed, President, Taxi Drivers' Section of the TWU

Addendum (20.6.1997):

- This statement could not be read out on 6 June 1997 as the IRC hearing stood-ever the matter and commenced proceedings 15 minutes earlier than the scheduled time of hearing (9.3O a.m.) in the absence of interested parties such as myself and others,

- Enclosed is my submission to you on 6.9.1996.

LAW to Misery of American People

LAW to Misery of American People

Saturday, 8th of March 2008, I have encountered Ms. Kathy Black from US LAW (US Labour Against War) at the Tom Mann Theatre, Sydney, Australia. Very nice, well spoken grandmotherly figure! She is traveling the world with her colleagues. They represent American Trade Unions.

They found out the ugliness and vicious cycles of wars and specifically the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq. They also knew, because of these wars, poor American workers are loosing their share of food, education, housing, medicine, civil rights, industrial rights and other vital needs. Needless to say, their governments who have been acting against the wish and interest of the American people are earning hate across the world.

I say, Good on You American Union Movement!

They stood up under a united banner. They are traveling around the world and building bridges between ordinary man and women across the globe.

Great lady, to her credit, she acknowledged the superior knowledge of her Australian audiences! She also confessed how little she knew from `inside America'!
We had many things in common and we became friends.

During the question time, my old friend Anna who was chairing the meeting continuously ignored me. However, due to the pressure of the audiences she had to accept my question.
My question was "how can we win war and peace"?

Her response was, "I don't know".

I continued, let's share together and find out. You see Australia is a fairly rich country and I am ashamed to say, we are stealing oil from our poor neighbor East Timor (the crowed applauded). Yet, we are sending hundreds of million dollar worth of military aid to ET and they are not even feeding one person other than a tragic `show' of Australian guns and boots. On the other hand the `bad guy of Cuba' delivered hundreds of teachers and doctors to ET and took many ET kids to Cuba to make them doctors and teachers. You see, he is assisting to build a society and surely one can work out, "who is wining"?

Then I gave a brief account of our attempts to destroy/weaken Iran in many ways over so many years. Yet, other day, so called Hitler of Iran Mahmoud_Ahmadinejad (not Mohammed Mossadegh ) hop in to a plane at Tehran and hop out at Baghdad airport, got into car, drove along the `HIGH WAY TO DEATH" without American escort. He stayed at the DENGERIUOS Red Zone, mixed with all kinds of people including Shias and Sunnis despite a totally idiotic media coverage of Shia/Sunni divide and Ahmadinazad in the `west' on that day and eventually finished his business and went back to Iran safely. I posed and said, "I am sure you now by now, who is wining".

At the end, we spoke, we cried and laughed, we look for hope and peace around the word in a much more determined manner.

But, what about my friend Anna? Was she preventing a "machine gun" like me not to attack her distinguished American guest as my old friend Professor Rees tried to protect his guest Scot Ritta earlier! Well, to my friend's surprise, Scot came and sat to me, and asked, "buddy, what was your question"?

More civilian casualties in Afghanistan

The ‘cost of war’ like the civilian casualties went up 90% during the first Gulf Massacre and it is on the rise. This situation worsened because of deliberately targeting water, electricity and other utility infrastructures as the USA did destroy more than 90% such infrastructures in Iraq on that time. To make things worse, the USA administration has added demonizing opponents based on their race and religion during military training sessions and in the operation theatres! The net impact of these deadly combinations has increased the civilian casualties by moirĂ© than 96%. To-days Iraq and Afghanistan are two prime examples of such a cruel reality. Unless the mankind finds a way out of this deliberately nurtured evil, we may be heading for greater tragedy.

Right now, opponents of the Talibans and Saddam are joining with others to fight against the Anglo-Americans and such a rage will rise continuously.

The US-led coalition confirmed a battle between US forces and Taliban militants in southern Afghanistan caused civilian casualties and a joint Afghan-US investigation was under way.

The governor of Helmand province has said 21 civilians were killed in airstrikes on Tuesday in the Sangin area, though residents said the civilian death toll was higher.

In a statement late yesterday, the coalition said it had treated 20 Afghan civilians wounded in the 16-hour battle, including a child who later died of its wounds.

"There are confirmed reports of civilian casualties, but it was unclear how many," the statement said.

"A joint Afghan and coalition force inquiry is being conducted."

General Dan McNeill, the top NATO commander in Afghanistan, told National Public Radio "it does appear there were civilian casualties," but it wasn't clear what caused them.

He said it was likely the Taliban militants had been firing on coalition forces from civilian homes.

US Special Forces "got into an ambush by a far superior force, and as they tried to work their way through this by shooting and moving, it became clear this was a pretty good size insurgent force who also could shoot and move pretty well," McNeill told NPR.

"And eventually the only way they were going (to) get out of it ... was to use airstrikes. It did not dissuade the insurgents," he said.

The battle in Sangin marked the third major incident resulting in civilian deaths in the last several months, sparking outrage among Afghans and a warning from President Hamid Karzai that civilian deaths can no longer be tolerated.

In March US Marines Special Forces fired on civilians after a suicide attack in eastern Afghanistan, killing 19 civilians and wounding 50.

Late last month airstrikes and fighting killed some 50 civilians in the western province of Herat, Afghan and UN officials say.
